TUDOR partners Alinghi Red Bull Racing in its challenge for the 37th America’s Cup
Regattas don’t come more thrilling than the America’s Cup. The world’s oldest international sporting trophy competition that started in 1851, the America’s Cup draws the world’s best yachtsmen, battling to steer their state-of-the-art race boats to glory. But more than a race, this competition is an exhibition of the poetry of speed, and a testament to human grit and ingenuity.
It is no surprise then, that the America’s Cup attracts global names that share the same values of innovation, courage, and tenacity. Known for creating timepieces that represent its ‘Born To Dare’ motto, Swiss watchmaking house TUDOR joined forces with one of the competition’s top contenders, the Alinghi Red Bull Racing team, as its main partner in 2022.
The Alinghi Red Bull Racing team, which is made up of two-time America's Cup winner, Alinghi, and global sporting purveyour, Red Bull, will sail under the flag of the Société Nautique de Genève. This year, TUDOR looks to help propel the team in its quest to win the 37th America's Cup.
To commemorate the partnership, TUDOR created two exclusive Pelagos FXD watches; a chronograph and a time-only model, both watches bear the collection’s trademark dive watch styling and robust performance, as well as design nods to the Alinghi Red Bull Racing team.
Billed by TUDOR as "the ultimate diver’s watch", the Pelagos collection was first introduced in 2012. Each Pelagos watch promises exceptional waterproofness, optimum legibility, and uncompromising chronometric precision certified by the Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute (COSC). The Pelagos FXD (‘FXD’ is an abbreviation for ‘fixed’), which debuted in 2021 and provides the canvas for the two Alinghi Red Bull Racing editions, features fixed strap bars crafted into the case itself, resulting in a slimmer silhouette that hugs the wrist more snugly.
Echoing the qualities of the collection, the Pelagos FXD “Alinghi Red Bull Racing”
editions are built to the same rigorous standards. Both models are waterproof to 200m, come with TUDOR’s trademark ‘Snowflake’ hands and square hour markers for exceptional legibility, and are accompanied by bidirectional 120-notch rotatable bezels that are filled with Grade X1 Swiss Super-LumiNova for enhanced luminescence in dark conditions.
The watches also feature COSC-certified automatic movements— Manufacture Calibre MT5602 and Manufacture Calibre MT5813, for the three-hand and chronograph versions, respectively—that are equipped with non-magnetic silicon balance spring and promise up to 70 hours of power reserve.
At the same time, the Pelagos FXD Alinghi Red Bull Racing editions pay fitting homage to the partnership between TUDOR and the team with unique technical and design features.
The cases are crafted from black matte-finished carbon composite—a first for TUDOR—and paired with titanium and steel. The cutting-edge material combination references Alinghi Red Bull Racing’s hydrofoil racing yacht, the AC75 (America’s Cup 75), which features a high-speed hull that is constructed from a proprietary blend of carbon, titanium and stainless steel.
On the design front, the watches showcase Alinghi Red Bull Racing’s iconic red-and-blue colourways. The matt blue dials echo the colour of the hull of the AC75, while the striking red accents recall the stripes on the hull.
The distinctive hues are replicated on the single-piece fabric straps, that are woven in France on 19th century Jacquard looms by the Julien Faure company. The 22 mm “Team Blue” jacquard-woven ribbon straps feature red accents and a titanium “D” buckle with a self-gripping fastening system, which lets you adjust the watch to ensure a perfect fit. For a final finishing touch, the watches are engraved with the Alinghi Red Bull Racing’s logo on the case backs.
